If you are reading this article I assume you are interested in earning a better job than you have now. I want to warn you that this hub will not teach you how to get promoted over night nor will it teach you how to get promoted easily. With that said, I can tell you that by following these steps consistently you will greatly increase your chance in earning a promotion.

Attitude

The first step in earning a promotion is coming to work with a positive attitude. It is said that success in the work place is based on 85% attitude, 10% knowledge, and 5% skill. The reason is that it only takes time to teach a person knowledge and skills, but it is nearly impossible to change someones attitude towards their work place, they have to change that on their own. So whether you succeed or fail at your job starts with your attitude when you come in the door. If you do not have a good attitude at your work place I suggest that you stop reading this hub and start reading the job classifieds for a new job because this information will do you no good.

Inform Your Supervisor of Your Interest

It is crucial in the process of earning a promotion that you inform your supervisor that you would like the opportunity to learn and grow with the company. When I say this I don't mean that you should tell your boss that you are interested in a better position because you want to make more money. The way to go about doing this is by telling your supervisor that you are interested in expanding your knowledge and value to the company as well as taking on more responsibility while helping the company to grow. The last thing you want is for your manager to think you are only working for the money, you should be working for the company!

Not telling your supervisor that you would like to earn a promotion is a lot like having a problem in the work place and not telling anyone. Do you think that a problem that no one knows about can be solved? Do you think that your boss will promote a person that they don't think has an interest in being promoted?

Take Ownership

Employees who act as if the business was their own are the people who make businesses successful. You should act as if everything in your work place effects you directly even if it really doesn't. Make sure that you do the right thing even when no one is looking. Remember that everything you do reflects the type of employee you are and your supervisor will notice when you take ownership.

Learn Your Manager's Job

You should ask your boss to teach you how to do his/her job. Most of the time if you want a promotion you are looking to do a job equivalent to your bosses job. There is nothing easier for a supervisor than giving someone a job that they already know how to do. Also, most managers would like nothing more than having an associate who is willing and capable of doing their job when needed and they would be more than happy to teach you what they know. You have the right to know more about how your company works and you should take full advantage of that by asking plenty of questions and being ready to learn new things.

Associate Yourself With Successful People

You should always associate yourself with people who are successful in their positions higher than your own. This will help you begin seeing your work place from the right perspective. It will also make your supervisor think of you more like someone in the position you want to be in.

Get away from anyone negative. You should try to coach them to become better employees but don't ever let yourself be seen as "one of them". If you can't help them you should find two of them, introduce them, and RUN!

Become a Go To Employee

Be the person that all the employees look to when they have questions or concerns. Also, be the person that all your bosses go to with important projects that need to be completed. Be consistent and punctual. Become the person that shows up early, stays late, never calls out, and is willing to come in to work when someone else doesn't show up. If you can do this your manager will begin to feel as if they owe you the promotion when it becomes available and it will eliminate almost all external candidates chances of getting the promotion because your boss knows that would risk losing his star employee.

Become an Insider

No matter how wrong this sounds being an insider can and will make an impact on whether or not you get a promotion. Find out what your boss does in his/her spare time and learn about it. Make sure to learn how to fill out that weekly NFL pool that most of our jobs have and maybe even pick up golf. It is a fact that having a good relationship with your boss can give you the edge you need to earn a promotion.

Find Out When a Job is Opening

With this next step you should be prepared to feel like a pester. You need to find out when a job is opening before it is actually open. This can easily be done by having open lines of communication with managers throughout the company that have access to this type of information.

Once you know for sure that a position is going to open, you need to approach your supervisor and simply ask how you are doing at your current job and if he/she thinks that you are ready for more responsibility. If you have followed the previous steps then the answer is obviously going to be yes and you will be a shoe in candidate for the promotion that you have EARNED.

Don't wait to be given the job, make sure to put in an application and tell your boss that you have done so. Be sure to ask for an update on the job opening at least once a week if not more often than that.

This may seem like a long grinding process, if dont correctly you can get promoted faster than you ever imagined. At my previous job I was promoted 3 times in less than 3 years and over those 3 years I nearly doubled the money I was making when I started the job.

Thank you for reading my hub and I hope that this will help you in the future.

Nice work, welcome to the HUB!

When (as an employer) you notice someone is alive and thinking, the smart employer will groom that person to develop their full potential. They would be foolish not to do so, people who are alive and thinking will get bored and drift off if you don't keep them challenged and rewarded.

So stay alive and thinking, you would be amazed how many people I have passed by who are the living dead with no thoughts of advancement in their tiny brains.

One other point, authority ALWAYS means responsibility, never accept responsibility without the authority to do the job. Equally if you apply one, you will gain the other.
